Black Voters League introduces candidates for 2004

The Black Voters’ League hosted a, “meet and greet barbecue” Tuesday for the candidates of the 2004 election. The Black Voters’ League is a three month old organization with 32 members. Rev. Tracy Andrus, chairman of the league stated that the goal of the organization for next year is to have 1000 members who are registered to vote. Members intend to enlighten the community by holding forums in which black issues are addressed.This event was a great success in achieving its goal of introducing the public to the candidates. Issues such as establishing health care for Waller and surrounding communities, the construction of streets and roads in and around Prairie View, and ways of getting the community educated and involved in the political process were addressed.

The candidates who expressed their views and asked for support included Ken Enlow, candidate for Waller County sheriff, Jamie Anzaldua, candidate for Waller County Tax Assessor, David E. McGregor, Sr., candidate for Waller County Commissioner Pct. 1, Duke Ali Shariff-Bey, candidate for Waller County Constable Pct. 3, John A. Rogers, candidate for Waller County Constable Pct.3, Simeon Queen, candidate for Waller County Commissioner Pct. 3, Milton Whiting, candidate for Waller County Commissioner Pct. 3, and Sylvia Cedillo, currently on leave of absence as director of Prairie View’s P.E.A.C.E Project to campaign for Waller County Criminal District Attorney.

The proceeds from the dinner will be donated to Waller County schools for school supplies and African American Literature. Next Tuesday the Voters’ League will issue what is called the Black Slate. This is a list of all the candidates the league has chosen to support and why. This list is based on the candidates’ views on the issues. Its main purpose is to influence black voters. Andrus said, “October 4 is the last day to register to vote for the Nov. 2 election. It is very important to vote so that your voice will be heard.
