Prairie View A&M University hosted Alabama State Hornets, Monday, October 18, to face off for women’s soccer. The Lady Panthers entered the game 10-2-1, currently second in the Southwestern Conference would need to win this one to keep its steady pace behind Grambling (10-5, 2-0) in the western division. The Lady Hornets (0-3, 0-3) who have not won a game this season, desperately needed a win to move ahead of the mediocre Alcorn State in the conference rankings.
The game was held at 10 a.m., and the lady panthers looked very well rested, scoring there first goal within the opening minutes of the game. The Hornets seemed exhausted before the game started, at times seeming lifeless as the Panthers took advantage of them in every statistical category possible.
In the first half, there were fourteen goals scored, all from the Panthers. Leading 14-0, the officials could have ended the game at half time. This definitely was one of the Hornet’s most embarrassing moments. They did have any offensive statistics at all. They did not even get an attempt at a goal. This game was terrible.
The second half was no different, the Lady Panthers continued on their scoring rampage. All seventeen players got in the game and three players scored off of the bench, Marquita Campbell scored two goals, Brianna Adams and Omotomiolola Ojeshina both had one each. They defeated the Hornets 22-0.
This game was just a big confidence booster for the Panters. Ten of the 17 players on Prairie View’s squad scored at least one goal throughout the game. Sabrina Ball, led the team with four goals.
The Lady Panthers Sunday game was not as easy as Monday’s game. They had to use tenacity, strength, and courage is what the Prairie View soccer team used to prevail over University Arkansas Pine Bluff. PV’s Ashley Molock set-up Ojeshina in scoring the first goal for PV with 34.09 minutes left in the first half of the game. PV was dominating offensively and defensively. PV made several more attempts at the goal in the first half but UAPB goalie Trina Fletcher was stopping the other attempts. Fletcher had 11 saves for her team against a persistent PV team. It was the opposite for PV goalie Amy Miller, who had two saves.
UAPB gave PV a scare when they scored and tied the game at one in the second half with 26.01 minutes left in the game. The delivery was made by Kerry Young who was unassisted in the play. UAPB was playing like PV in the first half attacking the goal. With only three minutes that had passed from UAPB scoring their first goal, they scored another goal and took the lead in the game at a score of 2-1. It was beginning to look like PV had lost the game until Krystal Dillon assisted Nori White to score the game tying point with 1:13 left on the clock.
Overtime did not produce that much fire like the game as White score the game winning goal with 9.05 minutes into the overtime period. Felicia Tarver, head coach of the soccer time said, “The team underestimated the other team based on how they were able to have several attempts at the goal in the first half.” Overall the game turned out to be a success as PV coasted to 3-2 victory over UAPB.
