Homecoming was here again last week for Prairie View Panthers. The homecoming festivities began on Sunday, Oct. 17. With the Gospel Explosion starting everything off, students looked forward to a successful homecoming.On Sunday, the university gathered promptly at 6 p.m. to celebrate their love for God. Surprisingly, there were a lot of students who gathered together to praise God. The mistress of ceremonies was a member of a church in Hempstead. Between acts she kept the audience laughing with little jokes and kept the spirit moving while telling students to keep praising Him.
The first act was the St. Agnes Missionary Baptist Church Choir from Houston, Texas. They got the crowd warmed up with two different songs. Although they were an older crowd, they were very energetic and everyone loved them.
The second act to perform was the University Dance Ensemble. They received a standing ovation.
Next to perform was Prairie View’s own Baptist Student Movement. As they approached the stage in black and gray the mistress of ceremonies made a comment saying that it looked like the whole student body was in the choir. As the choir and the audience laughed, BSM finally got themselves situated onto the stage and blessed everyone with two songs that had beautiful voices with lots and lots of energy. PV’s Mime Ministry also took the stage. They mimed to a song by Kirk Franklin and received numerous applauses. That is when the spirit really got moving!
Next up was four young ladies whose performance dealt with multicolored flags. A praise dance to Byron Cage’s “Praise Is What I Do” set the atmosphere for praise. The audience was crying and clapping as the danced continued.
The University Chorale stepped up next in their purple and gold robes singing “My Life, My Love, My All” by Kirk Franklin. The last act of the night was truly a blessing. As Mark Gordon and his choir stepped to the stage, they got the audience to thank God for all his many blessings.
Junior Lunita Anderson said, “I really, really enjoyed the Gospel Explosion, and I’m glad that I went. I felt that I was really blessed.” Freshman Angel Porter said, “I thought that this was a very good way to start off homecoming.” As the explosion ended, many felt that homecoming 2004 started on a good note.
