Each year brings about a change, and this year Prairie View has brought about a little change of its own. Recently the library along with Sodexho, the local food service provider on campus, opened the Jazzman’s Caf located on the first floor of the John B. Coleman Library. The new sleek “coffee house” is serving up the finest in gourmet coffee and appetizing salads and sandwiches. Upon first visit one would be inclined to think Jazzman’s is just another ‘run of the mill’ type coffee house, but Jazzman’s has something different to offer to the customer.
There is a continuous play of a variety of jazz, bellowing in the background to soothe your mind as you order your favorite item from the menu. “[I] personally think [it will benefit the students] by providing a place to relax with a nice atmosphere, nice jazz background to relax your body,” says library assistant Marvin Daniels. The caf, which some might be inclined to deem similar to that ‘other’ coffee house, is one that all students will surely take a liking to.
The atmosphere of the caf is soothing and defiantly relaxing, especially after a long day of studying and going to class. Students will enjoy the jazz playing throughout the caf that provides a mellow tone for studying and socializing. Sophomore Sean Spikes says “[the caf] is a great atmosphere, good service, good drinking.” With reasonable prices, and great products, it’s no doubt that PV students will put the caf to good use this semester.
The average cost for a tall [small] beverage will run you around $2.69, and if you are like most students and don’t carry cash while on campus, you will be happy to know that Jazzman’s does accept student IDs and uses the same point system as the businesses located in the MSC. Even with change, some things do stay the same, and that is the policy of no food or drinks in the library. There are tables and chairs provided in the caf and an expansion of those amenities is expected to take place in the future, for both indoors and out. For students who are not regular coffee drinkers, a Jazzman’s employee encourages students to “deviate from the norm, [come] listen to some jazz, and try something [new] for a break.” Anyone new to the ‘coffee house’ scene should remember that at one time we have all stood in line and asked ‘what the heck is an Americano,’ so do not be ashamed.
Do not miss out on great beverages just because you are unsure of the lingo or exactly what something is.
The friendly staff at Jazzman’s will be more than happy to help you make a selection. To coffee drinkers do not be stuck in your ways and not try something new this semester. Since Jazzman’s has been open I’ll admit that I’ve only had my standard, tall mocha, with whole milk, whipped cream and chocolate shavings, but I do have intentions to ‘venture’ out and try a macchiato, 1 shot espresso topped with foamed milk, one day. Next time you visit the library, books in tow, make a left before you get to the elevators, and come relax, take a sip and enjoy. Ella and Miles await you.
