It is a new year with new opportunities and possibilities. Prairie View A&M University is building higher standards in order to provide students with the best learning experience possible. The admission standards for 2005 have changed and the university has closed the door on open admission. Prairie View A&M University has been known in the past for accepting high school graduates no matter what their academic background may be. The university is still accepting any student without regard to their race, sex, or religion, but the student must be academically qualified.
In the past, some students have been admitted to Prairie View on a provisional status basis. A student who is on provisional status has a G.P.A. between a 2.0 and 2.5 but lower test scores.
According to Mary Gooch, director of undergraduate admissions, an advisory admissions committee is being established to make new policies and procedures on how students who don’t meet the admission requirements are viewed or admitted to the university.
“Changes are being made but all the details are not in place,” Gooch said.
The basic admission necessities are still the same. Prospective freshmen must have a 2.5 grade point average or above on a 4.0 scale. In addition, they must have a 17 or higher on the ACT or 820 or better on the SAT. Freshmen must complete a Texas State common application and include in their admission packet an official high school transcript or GED certificate. Applicants must also complete the Student Readiness form located on the Prairie View web site and must have passed all the sections of the TAKS test. A copy of the student’s social security card is needed, as well as a $25 nonrefundable application fee.
Transfer students must meet the same requirements as incoming freshmen but they should have a 2.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale with at least 15 transferable college level credits.
No late applications will be accepted. Admission deadlines for undergraduate students considering enrollment in the summer is April 1 and for students considering fall enrollment is June 1. Spring applications must be in by Nov 1.
Applications are available online to better serve prospective students. Furthermore, incoming students should make sure they meet housing and scholarship deadlines so everything will be on time and taken care of.
