PV rings in the new year with new director of media relations

On Monday Jan. 3, Tyra M. Metoyer was named director of media relations at Prairie View A&M University. Metoyer graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1996 with a bachelor of journalism degree in public relations. She is also an Inroads Houston alumna and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Her previous experiences include community development and planning, lobbying, and event planning. Metoyer will serve as the University spokesperson with responsibility for enhancing visibility and repositioning the brand. She will also manage information for the front page of Prairie View’s website, writing and producing brochures. “My main objectives are to increase the visibility of the university, help shape opinions, be clear and consistent, Metoyer said.” Metoyer continues to say, “Prairie View is such a great place, but many people have formed opinions about the university based on what they have heard, or what they think they might know. It is now my job to show how PVAMU does produce productive people, and great things occur on the campus each and every day.”

“The brand is very important, we want to market the university in every positive way possible,” Metoyer added. She also intends to include more students in media relations at PV: “Students are sometimes the only people that can tell the story clearly, and accurately.” “I really intend to use students from the Communications Department,” Metoyer added.
Since her arrival, Metoyer has been busy learning everything one can possibly want to know about PVAMU. She is going to meetings and becoming familiar with faculty members and students. She says the university will also be developing a Brand Strategy and there will be a graphics Standards Manual, along with various other policies, and procedures involving the university’s logo, seal, and communications management.

She is asking university officials and their departments to send envelopes as well as any brochures, pamphlets or other printed materials used to represent various departments or units to the A.I. Thomas Administration Building, Suite 102. This information will be helpful as the Brand and Marketing Committees move forward with developing policies that will result in a more unified approach and a brand that better represents the University, its history, people and accomplishments.

“Our initial target is to have the new images and information available for use in early July before the start of the fall semester, Metoyer said. Our objective is to develop a brand that clearly and consistently represents Prairie View and a process for supporting you and the work you do on behalf of the University.”
