New decals, same problems

The spring semester will prove to be no different than any other regarding parking regulations for students on campus.Students are still required to obtain decals in order to park on campus legally. Parking decals may be obtained from the Information Center with a fee receipt and accurate license plate number. The price for parking decals is $35, which students can choose to pay up front or have added to their fees. Parking decals are now more convenient, and durable given that they are plastic and hang from the rear view mirror.

The design of the new parking decals gives students the option of being able to easily transfer them in case they drive a different car to campus, without having to deal with the inconvenience of having to unshield decals off their mirror.

Sophomore Tiffany Ann Collins said,” The new parking decals were a great idea. They look better, and they’re easier to take off your car windshield than the previous ones. There are students driving around with several old deacls on their cars because they are almost impossible to get off, they were just a big hassle.”

The deadline for students to display a parking decal is Wednesday, Jan. 26. Students without decals at that time will be subject to having their cars towed, and/or being fined.

“It is important that students get their parking decals. We allowed three weeks before parking attendants began to take action,” said Director of Auxiliary Services Tressey Wilson.

Parking in the interior of the campus is still set aside for commuter students between the hours of 6 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday thru Friday. Due to the fact that Prairie View is considered a walking campus, a substantial increase in student population, and a lack of adequate parking spots on campus, residential students are restricted to parking in their designated residences.

Not abiding by parking guidelines could result in various fines for students. The fine for illegally parking in a handicapped zone or tow away zone is $100 dollars. A moving violation constitutes a $45 fine, and a non-moving violation entails a $25 fine. If students feel that they have been wrongly issued a parking citation they are eligible to file an appeal within 21 days of citation issuance.
