Paving the way

This may seem like I’m subjecting to stereotypes, but African-Americans are the greatest athletes on the planet, and that’s the bottom line. We are naturally made for competitive and physical play. No matter the degree of difficulty or scale of competition, we excel. Just look at the past century, we broke barriers to compete in the Caucasion infested sports and then took them over to make them our own. As long as sports was another avenue out of our ghettos and poverty, we took advantage, in every sport; basketball, baseball, football, golf, track, tennis and even hockey-well maybe not hockey. Throughout February, I will be committing this page to all of the African-American athletes who became firsts in their respective sports, who dominated their sport in their era, who are Hall of Famers in their sport, and even the young athletes who have just begun to take charge and evolve the sport around them. This week I have dedicated this page to the athletes who broke the color and/or sex barriers in their field of expertise, for instance Jackie Robinson, Jesse Owens, Cynthia Cooper, and Florence Griffith-Joyner. These athletes overcame the odds when, when all the cards were stacked against them, and are each legends and will be remembered forever for their achievements in each
