The Panther received five awards at the 2005 HBCU Newspaper Conference and Job Fair held in Baton Rouge, La., Feb 3-5.
The awards are:-2nd Place- Best Features/Arts and Entertainment
-2nd Place- Best News Story (Anterria Brown)
-3rd Place- Best Individual Photo (Evan White)
-3rd Place- Best News Coverage
-Honorable Mention- Best Sports Coverage
The conference/competition is an annual event sponsored by the Black College Communication Association in conjunction with professional news organizations.
Fifteen college newspapers submitted more than 825 entries for the competition.
The conference was attended by 171 students and 29 advisers from 18 colleges and universities.
Judges for this year’s competition were drawn from professional news organizations including the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, the Associated Press, the Philadelphia Inquirer, and the Baltimore Sun. The New York Times provided trophies and certificates.
The contest coordinator was Jean Thompson, editorial consultant of Black college Wire and former associate editorial page editor of the Baltimore Sun.
Next year’s conference will be held at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, N.C.
