The return of the Geto Boys

Back again are the boys from the Geto (ghetto), to re-illustrate the definition of real gangsta rappers and to tell it like it is. On their new album “The Foundation” on Rap-A-Lot Records, The Geto Boys are commanding respect from the young and old hip-hop fans. Scarface, a native of South Acres in Houston, New York native Bushwick Bill, and Willie D. of 5th Ward in Houston, have come together again to make the most street lyrical, hard core, gangsta’ rap album put out in seven years.

Each rapper takes their experiences growing up in the streets and expresses them over thundering hood beats. The group continues their tradition of the rigid stand against racists, snitches, crooked cops, and hypocritical politicians.

The Geto Boys waste no time as they begin the album with the track Declaration of War, directed at rappers that are caught up in the glamour of fame and forgot how dangerous it really is to live the lives that most are portraying. When It Get Gangsta (featuring Houston’s own Z-Ro) and ‘What?’ are without a doubt the hardest rap songs made in a long time. The lyrics are instantly gangsta’ from the minute the beat drops until it the beat stops.

Hood songs include 1,2, the 3 and G-Code. Nothing 2 Show encourages listeners to have just as much to show for as the work it took to get. The Boys take it to the club for those that just want to boogie with songs like We Boogie and Yes, Yes, Yall, which has an up-tempo beat combined with an inviting piano roll that anyone can rock their head to.

The album also showcases slow melodies such as I Tried, in which the harp sounds in the background grab the listener as the lyrics express personal feelings about growing up and doing the best they could in the streets of Houston. Leaning On You is a more laid back tune on a spiritual note with a melody of reminisces back on life, both good and bad times. This song is also a celebration and appreciation to the Lord for bringing them through the struggle. In The End, the rappers open up more and express their understanding of this life not lasting forever and remembering that “the secret is to win, you will find peace in the end.
