Yeah, it’s still February, which means I will continue on my tandem and parade the accomplishments of African Americans in the world of sports entertainment.I wonder if anyone has heard the name Reggie Fowler, if not you will very soon. There is a lot of talk aout him lately in the media because he is possibly the soon to be owner of the Minnesota Vikings…what’s the significance of that?, you might ask. Well he will be the first black owner of an NFL team. Yes the first. The NFL has existed for over half a century and a black man or woman has never owned a team. I have one thing to say, it’s about time.
The current owner of the Vikings is Red McCombs, who has maintained that position since 1998. Since then the Vikings have sold out every home game and have made it to the NFC championship game twice.
Fowler is an Arizona businessman reportedly worth more than $400 million. If everything goes through, history will be made.
The owner of Black Entertainment Television, Robert Johnson, had already made news last when he becamse the majority owner of the Charlotte bobcats, an NBA expansion team.
This is a trend more black entrepenuers are following in the 21st century, even entertainers (Nelly and Jay-Z). Hopefully, this will open the door for others who have aspirations of owning a professional team.
