Track team lays foundation to become best in SWAC

The Prairie View men’s track and field team has proved that it is among the best in the South Western Athletic Conference. The Panthers recently competed in the SWAC indoor championships in Baton Rouge, La. Overall the Panthers placed 3rd, behind Grambling State, and Jackson State, with 104 total points. Four Panthers placed 2nd in four different events, sophomore Chris Taylor in the 200, sophomore Jason Okoro in the 400, freshman Jason Mitchell in the high hurdles, and sophomore Kenneth Wilson in the long jump.

The four by four relay team placed 4th, with members Jack Owens, Sean Celestine, Jason Okoro, and Jason Mitchell. The Panthers basically dominated most of the events.

In the 60 yard dash, Chris Taylor placed 3rd, Jack Owens placed 6th, and Ben Boyd placed 7th. Other Panthers like Ashton Brown and Kenneth Wilson placed in two separate events, the 1600 and 3000 meters (Brown), and the long jump and triple jump (Wilson).

Shot putters George Hester and Bradley Durham placed 4th and 7th, respectively.

Brown, Mike Miller, Hezekiah Pascel, and Alex Sydney, which consisted of one of the Panthers’ relay team came in 4th place.

Other events the Panthers placed in were the triple jump (Dewight Page and Wilson) and the high jump (Glen Cason). The Panthers looked very good throughout the competition, although improvement is needed for the NCAA Indoor Championship, Mar. 11-12, in Fayetteville, Ark.

All of the track meets so far have been out of town, but the Prairie View Relays will be Mar. 25.
