KPVU Annual Radiothon

If you didn’t already know, Prairie View A&M University is home to a growing media outlet. However you get your fair share of music, it’s probably through KPVU 91.3 FM. Besides the musical selection, what’s really impressive about KPVU is that it incorporates its academic surroundings, allowing students a chance to have hands-on experience in broadcasting.

Around this time of year, KPVU cranks up operations for its annual membership campaign called Radiothon.

“Radiothon, which is also known as the membership campaign, is designed to solicit support from listeners throughout our community of license,” said Larry Coleman, general manager of KPVU. “This is when we ask for donations from listeners and organizations to raise funds for overall operations of the radio station.”

This year’s theme, “Let the Music Play,” is a tribute to the late Barry White. Radiothon is designed to help KPVU continue to provide quality programming on a regular basis, to enhance the broadcast signal in order to serve a greater audience and to provide a training facility for individuals interested in radio broadcasting.

KPVU’s membership campaign began in 2004 after nearly three years without an official membership drive.

“Last year was sort of like a test to see what the support has been like,” said Gwen Johnson, development and promotions director of KPVU. “It was well received.”

With last year’s total contributions exceeding the goal by $1,200, indeed it was well received. So, this year KPVU is adding $5,000 to last year’s goal of $15,000.

In order to reach these goals, KPVU always requests the aid of individuals and organizations throughout the community.

“Last year there was a large amount of support from the community and campus organizations including the Symphonic Band, Groove Phi Groove, Alpha Kappa Alpha, the Sociology Club, Sigma Tau Theta, Zeta Phi Beta, the Retired Teachers Association, the Chamber of Commerce and the National Alumni Association,” said Johnson. “We had a good number last year and we’re looking forward to working with more organizations as well as individuals this year.”

KPVU is still looking for volunteers to answer phones and aid in the daily Radiothon operations. KPVU accepts volunteers year-round, “especially during the membership campaign,” says Coleman.

To volunteer, go to the radio station located in Hilliard Hall to fill out a volunteer form and reserve a preferred time slot. Check flyers posted around campus for more information.

“It is a very heavy, logistical project,” said Johnson. “It takes a lot of preparation, a lot of planning and it’s a great opportunity with so much potential here in this area.”
