SGA reflects on previous year, welcomes new officers banquet

The Student Government Association held its annual End of Year Banquet last Sunday in the MSC ballroom. The banquet was a quaint gathering of SGA members, administration and faculty members. The banquet served not only to reflect on SGA this past year and to close out the year, but also to inaugurate its new officers and welcome the prospects of SGA in the 2005-2006 school year. Stepping down from office was 2004-2005 SGA President, Nigel Redmond. The banquet also saw the stepping down of Tracie Calloway, SGA vice president for the 2004-2005 academic year.

One of the highlights of the night was the official swearing in of Oludayo “Olu” Olusanya and Courtney Smith as the new president and vice president.

Also highlighting the night was a moving speech by Dr. Doris Price, associate vice president of student affairs. Price spoke of her involvement in SGA this year and with Redmond and Calloway. Additionally, she talked of how rewarding the year has been for her with the former officers, and encouraged students to never “burn bridges” with those you come in contact with, in that you may never know when you may need their assistance.

Moreover, Price emphasized to the new officers, and the audience alike, how important it is to be respectful as an SGA officer.

The university’s president, Dr. George Wright, also spoke fondly of SGA and touched on maintaining proper leadership skills and showing respect.
Recognition and rewards were also given to SGA graduating members, outstanding members and its special, dedicated members.
