Despite holding an early lead, the Prairie View A&M University Lady Panthers soccer team dropped the third consecutive game of the season with a 7-2 loss to Dallas Baptist. For the second consecutive game, the Lady Panthers scored the first goal of the game, when PVAMU freshman midfielder Mayra Castillo scored an unassisted goal to put the Lady Panthers up 1-0.
Things went unchanged for the next 15 minutes until DBU’s Michelle Magnotta scored an unassisted goal to tie the match at one. Fifty-one seconds later, DBU’s Angelica Sandoval broke the tie to give the Lady Patriots a 2-1 lead to close out the half.
“I stressed to them the importance of closing out halves,” said head coach Felicia Davis. “I think we got a little fatigued towards the end of the first half. Soccer isn’t one of those sports that you can go out and compete in, if you’re not in great shape.”
Less than two minutes into the second period, sophomore midfielder Kalenna Marshall of the Lady Panthers scored a goal off an assist from freshman defender Gloria Andrande to once again tie the game at two.
The score remained tied for the next 25 minutes until Dallas Baptist broke the game open with five unanswered goals in a span of 12 minutes.
As a team, Prairie View had six shots, three shots-on-goal and one assist. Dallas Baptist countered with 33 shots, 19 shots-on-goal and two assists.
Lady Panther goalie Amy Miller had 12 saves for the game, with eight saves coming in the first period.” I told my team we have to continue to fight all the way thru games,” said Davis. “We’ll be playing short handed the next few games so everyone is going to have to step it up another level.
