To some, fashion is not an enjoyable aspect of life to take part in. The hassle of matching the right pants with the right shirt, making sure your shoes are in style for the season, choosing the most precious accessories, placing each hair on your head in the right place, and finally making sure you have on the right make-up and lip gloss does not come easy to a lot of people. First, one must understand what fashion is. Veronica Smith, a senior communications major, said that “fashion is what you make it.” With fashion trends forever changing from season to season, Smith explains that, “although certain items may be deemed ‘in style,’ you must make them fit your own unique attitude. Fashion is adjusting trends to fit your style and attitude.”
For some, fashion may be a challenge because the media shows what is supposed to be fashionable and what is not. Smith gives confidence to those who like to go against the grain of what is labeled as ‘popular:’ “One item may look hideous to one person, but look stunning to another… I feel your sense of fashion is a direct reflection of your personality.”
So what are the fashion trends of today? Brandi Greer, a senior communications major, says “BIGG IS BACK!” Greer who has experience in modeling for such designers as Vanessa Riley London, The Club Flava, Six Figgaz, Mellow Drama Boutique in Houston, and labeled as the May model of the month on I-10Media.com, explains what fashions are trendy for this season: “Headwear- Kangol hats, the beanie look, or a nice solid, polka-dot, or striped scarf. Hair- big curls, Afro, wavy, and extensions. Also, the two-toned color-crown of the head. Eyewear- Big square sunglasses. Handbags- ‘Big!’ The straw look, slouch bags, and shoulder or handbags. Belts- The braided style with sequence are the most popular. The most common colors are silver, black, and brown. When wearing the belt don’t put it through the loops. Just throw it on. Shoes- Flats and wedges are back!”
Fashion can become very complex when trying to keep up with all the trends and styles. Instead of being worried about the current style, both Greer and Smith say that “Fashion is not just today’s hottest trend for the season, but ut’s when you step out of the norm and are not afraid to make a bold statement.
