43, 37 win 2nd annual UCFL championship

The UCFL has been raising the bar for intramural sports these past two years and last week’s championship games were no exception. Thursday, Oct. 13, marked the end of the season, but both games kept spectators grasped at the end of their seat until the finale. In last year’s championship, men’s building 38 and women’s building 48 were victorious, but neither was in sight for this one.

Buildings 43 and 37 eventually were the victors and were presented plaques and medals at the end of each game. UCFL head Braxton Bennett said “I am proud of the way this season has gone, each team conducted themselves with outstanding sportsmanship, and no classes interfered with this extra-curricular activity.”

The first game was held between the women’s teams 35 and 37. 37 battled from an 0-2 start to make this championship appearance and 35 was undefeated. During their first drive 35 jumped out to an early lead, 6-0, but 37 quickly answered with a touchdown, tieing the game 6-6. A pass from quarterback Derice “DeDe” McVea to Areiel Wisner in the fourth quarter would eventually seal 35’s fate, making 37 UCFL champions.

In the men’s game, 43 head coach Triston Hardeman led his team to victory with precise coaching and with team MVP, quarterback Quentin Morgan. 43 defeated 45, 21-7. At the end of the game Hardeman said, “We lost our very first game, but all we needed was to come together as a team, I knew we would win it.
