The Prairie View A&M University Lady Panthers (3-6, 3-2 SWAC) captured a Southwestern Athletic Conference victory by defeating the Lady Jaguars of Southern University (0-8, 0-3 SWAC) 2-1.Four minutes into the first period, Merdlyn Matthews of Southern put the first goal on the board for the Lady Jaguars on an assist from Almarie Ortiz-Soto. The Lady Panthers responded with a goal of their own at the 35 minute mark when freshman Mayra Castillo kicked in an unassisted goal to bring the game to a tie. For the half, the Lady Panthers took 10 shots-on-goal, while Southern was only able to muster three shots-on- goal.
The second half was close as neither team was able to score offensively until the closing minutes of the contest.
At the 83 minute mark, senior Brittney Joseph of the Lady Panthers scored the go-ahead goal that would eventually stand as the game winner.
Prairie View added eight more shots-on-goal in the second half, while holding Southern to only two shots.
“We’ve been playing very well the past few games,” said PVAMU head coach Felicia Davis. “The win over Texas Southern was big for our girls and I’m glad that we were able to carry over that momentum into the game against Southern on the road.”
The Lady Panthers return to action on Friday Oct. 21 when they travel to Huntsville, Ala. to take on the Lady Bulldogs of Alabama A&M and on Sunday, Oct. 23, they face the Lady Hornets of Alabama State.
