The Prairie View A&M Panther football program put another notch into their win column with a convincing 34-7 road victory over SWAC -west conference rival Arkansas Pine-Bluff. The Panthers beat the Golden Lions for the first time since a 35-16 victory in 2001.
The Panthers jumped onto the scoreboard when freshman kicker Mario Sanchez booted a 37-yard field goal at the 8:46 mark.
With 37 seconds left in the first quarter, senior running back Kerry Wilson carried the ball nine yards for another Panther touchdown, giving them a 10-0.
The Lions scored a touchdown on a 71-yard pass to bring the game to 10-7. With 7:38 remaining in the half, Sanchez added another field goal, this time from 39 yards out.
With the possession of the ball and two minutes left in the half, senior quarterback Michael Hill found junior receiver Marvin Howard on a 17-yard pass to keep the Panthers on top 20-7 going into halftime.
In the third quarter, with 3:17 remaining, Hill connected with Howard once more on 35 yard touchdown pass to increase the lead to 27-7.
With the game out of reach, the Panthers tacked on their final score in the fourth quarter when Wilson ran ten yards for his second touchdown of the game.
Wilson finished the game with a team-leading 118 rush yards and two touchdowns.
Hill threw for 161 yards, connecting on 12 of 20 attempts.
Hill’s leading receiver was Howard, who caught three balls for 57 yards to go with his two scores.
As a team, Prairie View (3-5, 1-5) amassed 426 yards of total offense (265 rush, 161 pass).
Defensively, the Panthers held the Golden Lion offense to only 251 yards of total offense.
The Panthers return to action on November 12 to take on the Tigers of Jackson State here on the campus at Blackshear Field. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m
