DALLAS (AP) The Federal Emergency Management Agency will give Texas an additional $2.6 million to reimburse Montgomery County for costs incurred when local officials took in evacuees from Hurricane Katrina, U. S. Sen. John Cornyn said Monday. The announcement came just days after Cornyn, R-Texas, announced that FEMA was sending $101 million to the state to reimburse Houston.
“I’m encouraged by the pace at which funding reimbursement is beginning to return to the state, but will continue to monitor FEMA’s efforts to ensure that our cities and counties aren’t left holding the bag,” Cornyn said in a news release from Washington, D.C.. “More is on the way, but this additional funding is certainly welcome after the enormous costs incurred for providing housing and other services to evacuees.”
The money will reimburse Montgomery County for the costs of transportation, unit rentals, furnishings and other expenses.
Cornyn said in his announcement Friday that FEMA was continuing to assess costs incurred by other cities in Texas and other states, and further reimbursements were expected shortly.
