For her outstanding performance during the week of Jan. 10-17, freshman forward/center Twila Stokes was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s newcomer of the week.
In two games, Stokes averaged 7.5 points, 15.5 rebounds, one steal and 0.5 blocks. She recorded 18 rebounds and seven points at Grambling State and tallied eight points, 13 boards and two steals against Jackson State.”Twila is beginning to play up to the level we had anticipated prior to her arrival,” said Lady Panther head coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke. “We’re excited about her progress and growth as a player. She is only a true freshman so we look forward to seeing her continued improvement.”
The 6-0 freshman from Hawthorne, California grabbed a school record 19 rebounds against Texas Pan-American in the team’s season opening win. Stokes’ 19 rebounds is the most rebounds tallied by any player in the SWAC during a game so far this season. She is also among the elite in the conference, leading the way rebounds (10.1) and ranking third in blocked shots (1.56).
