UCBA Midnight Madness takes center stage

While many may feel basketball is a recreational sport, some feel it is a way of life. University College, the freshman home away from home, recently held its annual UCBA tourney. This year the tournament was done with a twist. Instead of the usual several weeks done in the past, the tournament was done in a weekend event.

The basketball action started with six female teams and six male teams going head to head in double elimination games, non-stop. The LCMs and CAs worked diligently to provide a wholesome tournament this past Friday and Saturday. Tournament action began on Friday night at 9 p.m. in the New Gym and continued until the first round of games was over at 2 a.m.

The action recessed and reconvened on Saturday afternoon with the second round and semifinals one after another lasting until 3 a.m. on Sunday.

In the end, the championships were given to the ladies of building 39, coached by Chris Mitchell and the men of building 36, coached by Marshall Wooten.

UC was especially grateful to the Department of Recreational Sporting for the privilege of allowing them to host the event.

“We look forward to building greater tournament action next school year,” said Shandon Neal, director of student life for University College. “Every year we try to build on our successes and we think that this particular sport is an opportunity for our students to build lasting friendships and camaraderie.”

UC looks to continue providing activities for the freshmen in sporting with the upcoming second annual UC Relays in April and the introduction of the UC Volleyball to take place during the Spring Bling in April.

Recognizing how important the freshman year is, UC has dedicated itself to such co-curricular programming and activities to create a balance for the ideal Prairie View man/woman.

Be on the lookout for more exciting programs coming from University College’s student and residential life division soon.
