Nearly half of Prairie View A&M University’s student athletes were among the students who received special recognition for being named to the University Honor Roll and Dean’s List at the annual Founder’s Day and Honors Recognition Convocation on Wednesday, March 29, in the William J. Nicks Building.A total of 167 student-athletes received academic recognition. Eleven were named to the honor roll for both the 2005 spring and 2005 fall semesters, while 43 student athletes made the honor roll during the fall 2005 semester and 21 student-athletes made the spring 2005 honor roll.
One hundred and nine student athletes were among those listed on the Dean’s List. Twelve student-athletes made the Dean’s List both semesters.
Students who earn recognition on the honor roll must have a GPA between 3.5 and 4.0 for the semester.
The Dean’s List consists of students who attain a GPA between 3.0 and 3.49.
Athletic Director Charles McClelland noted that the student athlete’s success was partly due to a stronger commitment to academics by the athletic department.
“I’m very pleased with the news that approximately 48 percent of our student-athletes attained GPAs of 3.0 or above,” said McClelland. “It shows that we are committed and focused on building a quality athletic program not just on the field but in the classroom.
“Also, in light of the recent NCAA APR (Academic Progress Report), this shows the positive changes that have been implemented by the athletic department. I’m confident those numbers will be reflected in the next APR.”
Men’s track and field/cross country led the way with 31 student athletes earning GPAs of 3.0 or above.
Football was second with 29 athletes while baseball and softball had 16 each.
Women’s track and field/cross country and women’s basketball followed with 15 apiece.
