Texas Southern (13-17, 9-6 SWAC) used a four-run eighth inning rally to knock off Prairie View (22-11, 11-4 SWAC) to avoid handing the Panthers a series sweep this weekend. The Tigers, who entered the match-up against Prairie View, a heavy underdog, took advantage of some costly Panther errors to secure the win. With the game tied at eight runs apiece in the top of the seventh inning, Tigers’ second baseman Delvin Sanders doubled to centerfield to give TSU a one run lead. TSU leftfielder James Stewart drove in an additional run on a single to center field to push the Tigers’ lead to two runs (10-8) going into the bottom of the seventh.
The Panthers stalled offensively scoring no runs in the seventh and eighth innings while allowing Texas Southern to push its advantage to six runs after a four-run eighth inning outburst. PVAMU added one-run in the bottom of the ninth inning to close out the score at 14-9.
“Despite the fact that we lost the game, I’m extremely pleased with the way our team fought today,” said PVAMU head coach Michael Robertson. “We battled the entire game but fell short at the end. Our team has showed a lot of resiliency and mental toughness throughout this season.”
Prairie View’s Josh Terrell was charged with the loss while Texas Southern’s Sam Nottebart was credited with the victory. Prairie View will return to action on Tuesday, April 4 when they host Houston Baptist at the William Nicks Intramural and Athletic Complex. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
