PV celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

The department of multicultural affairs has scheduled a number of events for the months of September and October to help Prairie View students appreciate and celebrate Latino culture.

Hispanic Heritage Month, which was authorized in 1968 by Congress and the administration of Lyndon B. Johnson, is celebrated Sept. 15 and Oct. 15. These days bear special significance as independence days for many Latin American countries including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, and have been set aside for a celebration of the diversity and unique culture of individual Spanish-speaking peoples in the United States.

Elma Gonzalez, director of the multicultural affairs and the creative force behind the Hispanic Heritage Month events, stressed the importance of celebrating the diversity of Prairie View and stated that her department was “doing its job in bringing Latino culture to African American students.”

Festivities will include the 3rd annual “Salsa on the Hill” performances outside of the Memorial Student Center on Sept. 27 presented by the university’s Classic Dance Ensemble.

The department of multicultural affairs has posted information about other exciting events and encourages students of Prairie View of all cultural backgrounds to participate and enjoy the festivities.
