After being delayed twice due to weather conditions the Prairie View versus Langston football game was eventually suspended with 4:01 remaining in the third quarter. Langston scored first at the 6:51 mark of the first quarter on a Jimmy Early touchdown catch from quarterback Kendrick Dozier. Trint Rust’s extra point was good, giving the Lions a 7-0 lead over the Panthers. Langston upped its lead to 14-0 on a Jimmy Scales touchdown scamper of three yards at the 10:27 mark of the second quarter.
The Lions scoring success continued as Dozier ran in their third score of the day on a 28-yard touchdown run giving Langston a 21-0 advantage over the Panthers.
Prairie View answered offensively when quarterback Mark Spivey found receiver Gabriel Ediae-Osaze in the back of the end zone with 1:34 remaining before intermission for the Panthers’ first points of the day. Prairie View went into halftime trailing Langston by the score of 21-7.
In the second half Prairie View received the kickoff and began moving the ball with success early in the third quarter after Spivey connected with Marc Ison for a 51-yard completion placing the ball at the Lions’ 14 yard line. Prairie View subsequently drove the ball down to the Langston six yard line after rushes by Kerry Wilson and Arnell Fontenot respectively.
After a penalty delay Prairie View faced a third down and seven from the Langston 11 yard line. Spivey was sacked for a 14 yard loss that left the Panthers with a fourth down and 21 yards. On fourth down Spivey completed a pass to Fontenot for a fourteen yard gain but it was not enough for a first down and PVAMU turned the ball over on downs.
Langston subsequently went on a seven play 89 yard drive that was capped off with a nine yard touchdown pass from Dozier to Early. After a successful extra point Langston led Prairie View 28-7. Neither team would put any more points on the board as play was suspended.
“We’re disappointed that the game was called. We wanted an opportunity to come back and win the game,”said PVAMU head coach Henry Frazier III. “We’re a second half team as we have proven in our previous games. If we had played the game, I feel that we would have come back and won.
“Both schools’ athletic directors will get together in the next couple of days to decide if the game will be finished.
