Prairie View basketball teams sweep Alabama State

The men and women’s basketball squads swept the Alabama State Hornets this past weekend in Montgomery, Al. The Lady Panthers who have been having one of their best seasons in recent years kicked off things last Saturday by defeating the Lady Hornets 87-61.

The 87-point total that the Lady Panthers mounted up against Alabama State is their second highest point total in a victory for the team this season, their highest point total came in a game early in the season against the University of Houston in which they scored 90 points.

Leading the way for the Lady Panthers was Candice Thomas who led the team in scoring with 22 points, while Twila Stokes led the team in rebounds with eight boards. Thomas had led the Lady Panthers on three other occasions before Saturday’s game against the Lady Hornets.

Candice Thomas led the team once again in scoring tallying 15 points, while prolific scorer Gaati Werema led the team in rebounds with 10.

After defeating both Alabama State and Alabama A&M in back to back games the Lady Panthers now hold a 14-13 overall record with an impressive 12-4 record in the SWAC; they are also 7-2 at home.

The Lady Panthers weren’t the only ones coming out victorious last Saturday. The Prairie View A&M men’s basketball squad came out on top as well with a 74-60 victory over the Hornets. The victory marked the seventh of the season for the team and the fifth in conference play.

Brian Ezeh and Chris Gaines led the team in scoring, putting up 16 points a piece, while Ezeh also lead the team in rebounds with eight. This was the third occasion that Chris Gaines led the team in scoring having led the Panthers in scoring in two previous contests against Chattanooga, 22 points, and Tennessee State, nine. The men’s basketball team has won two of their last three games with the other win coming against Mississippi Valley State back on Feb. 17.

The men and women’s basketball squads played with determination and executed their game plan well in their sweep against the Alabama State.

The women’s team is making a run for the SWAC conference championship as they sit currently tied for first place with Jackson State and Alabama A&M.

Gaati Werema continues to be the leading scorer for the Lady Panthers for the season with a solid average of 15.7 points per game.

On the men’s side Brian Ezeh is leading the way for the season in points per game with an 11.0 average.

Prairie View A&M University’s basketball will next face off with with Alcorn State Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
