The Prairie View A&M University Lady Panthers soccer team kicked off its 2007 season in Hammond, La; With two hard-fought losses, 1-2 and 1-4 to Southeastern Louisiana and South Alabama.
The Lady Panthers went into an overtime thriller with Southeastern Louisiana in what was a highly competitive match.
“It had been a tight match the whole game,” said senior defender Briana Mouttet. “We were very confident going into overtime and we had a lot of momentum.”
Southeastern struck first blood within the first four minutes of the game. The Lady Panthers wouldn’t get the chance to score until the 85 minute mark.
In overtime, Southeastern had the final word, with 20 seconds left in overtime; Dana Mayer of Southeastern Louisiana sealed the game, with a goal assisted by teammate Janae Sheldon. With the final score 2-1, the Lady Panthers received their first loss.
The next day, the team faced South Alabama.
South Alabama scored twice within ten minutes while Prairie View’s only goal came from freshman forward Angelica Diaz, assisted by Brenda Castillo.
The Lady Jaguars of South Alabama attempted a total of 26 shots while the Lady Panthers had a total of three attempts.The final score was 4-1.
Although the Lady Panthers have started the season 0-2, they are looking to improve as the season goes on.
“We have two early losses, but we are still confident that we will have a successful season,” said senior Emily Scarborough. “I think that as the season progresses, we’ll continue to improve.”
The Lady Panthers’ next opponent will be Houston Baptist University on Sept. 15.
