Volleyball wins first conference game

The Prairie View A&M Lady Panther volleyball team took on the Texas Southern Lady Tigers in Houston at the H&PE Arena. Fortunately, this wasn’t the first time the Lady Panthers and Texas Southern competed. They previously met at Texas Southern’s own invitational, and Prairie View’s invitational, with Prairie View defeating the Lady Tigers.

In the first match, Prairie View won with a score of 30-26. The Lady Panthers kept their composure and never gave the Lady Tigers any chances for victory.

The second and third matches of the game were won with little difficulty. The Lady Panthers won the second game 30-19, and the third game 30-20. The Lady Panthers’ defense was remarkable with no ties or lead changes throughout all three matches.

Leading the charge for the Lady Panthers was senior outside hitter Tamika Newman with 13 kills. Three more than six of the Texas Southern’s players combined. Senior outside hitter TaCho Richard and freshman setter Erin Fondel both contributed eight each. Senior setter Laura de la Fuente led the team with an impressive 34 assists. The Lady Panthers will host their first conference home opener Thursday, Sept. 27 against Southern University at 6 p.m.
