Soccer closes out season with loss to Mississippi Valley State

After clinching a spot in the SWAC tournament, the Lady Panthers traveled to Lake Charles, La. Nov. 8 to compete for the championship. Of the six-team tournament, slated to play Prairie View first in the quarterfinals was Mississippi Valley State. In the end, the Lady Panthers fell to the Delta Devils 0-3.

“We worked well, and worked hard; but we will get it next year,” said sophomore outside midfielder Anna Rabino. Going into the tournament, the Lady Panthers were outscoring their opponents 20-19 in the first period, and had 109 saves for the season. Under the tutelage of head coach Felicia Tarver-Davis, the Ladies had a conference record of 2-1-1. Captains of the team were seniors Brianna Moutett, Kaleena Marshall, and sophomore Mayra Castillo.

The Lady Panthers continued to stay strong throughout the season and it showed in their statistics, as they ranked fifth in the conference in goals, assists, and assists per game. Goalie Jessica Garcia ranked fourth in the conference in saves, Brenda Castillo ranked seventh in the conference in assists, and sixth in points per game. Angelica Diaz ranked seventh in conference in shots and shots per game.

In comparison to last year, Rabino said, “This year went a lot better than the last, we get along better, and it was a more relaxed atmosphere.”

The Lady Panthers will lose three players due to ineligibility, but will continue to work hard to win a championship.
