The Marching Storm thunders in Houston MLK parade

Houston residents reeled from the thunder of The Marching Storm, Monday Jan. 28 during the city’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. parade.

Beginning at Minute Maid Park in downtown Houston, the KHOU TV/ Channel 11 televised parade lasted two hours before returning to its starting point.

Led by band director Eric Gordon, the band blared a variety of songs– performing “Everything” by Tyrese and even stopping to play a university tune.

Kristopher Mosley, a senior music major and trumpet section leader, has been a member of the band since 2003.

Mosely said the band was notified Friday that they would be performing in the parade. Behind the music and beyond the dance steps there’s hard work, Mosley says.

“People don’t know all the hard work we put in and the obstacles we overcome for the performance,” he said, adding that weather conditions were a major factor of those obstacles.

But this is struggle the crowd has never seen reflected during the band’s shows, Mosely hoped.

“The performance is everything.”
