Prairie View progresses at Houston All-Comers

The Prairie View A&M Track and Field team once again headed to the University of Houston for the Houston All-Comers meet Saturday. As the indoor track season winds down, runners prepare for the last meet before the SWAC Indoor Championship.

It’s been a growing trend to see the men and women improve in each event through each meet. The men and women continue to work hard to once again claim another championship, whether it may be indoor or outdoor.

In the 60-meter dash, Chris Taylor finished seventh out of 63, in the 400 meter dash Jason Okoro finished first out of a field of 54 in 49.06, fifth out of 42 in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.41, and in the 800-meter run Brandon Hicks finished fourth, as David Cruse finished eighth.

The Prairie View men continued their heavy streak of domination as Matthew Jones and Roland Dejean finished second and third in the mile run, and in the 3000-meter run a second place finish from Alonzo Thomas, and a fifth place finish from Ashton Brown continued to give the Panthers the momentum they needed to finish the meet strong.

The women didn’t qualify for the top eight in the 60-meter dash, but what was missed was made up for in the 200-meter dash, as 10 runners placed out of a field of 37. With the momentum now rolling, Yolanda Chatmon finished second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:19.20, and Ronda Tucker finished fifth out of 23 running nine seconds flat. In the triple jump Ashley Magee finished sixth and jumped a total of 37-01.00 meters.

On Feb. 29, the men and women will battle the SWAC for the Indoor Track and Field title in Baton Rouge, La.
