The season continues to be an uphill battle for the softball team. Against Stephen F. Austin University, the ladies were shut out two games, 0-8 and 0-10. In the turmoil, the ladies produced a total of only four hits and four errors.
In the first game of conference play, a high scoring rumble with Texas Southern, the ladies played hard but lost in extra innings, 16-17.
In the first inning, the ladies got the bats moving and scored three runs, and backed up their effort in the third inning scoring three runs. An Emily Holcombe three run homerun brought in Brenda Sneed and Christine Uribe across the plate for the score. Texas Southern stayed within striking distance, especially during the innings when Prairie View didn’t score. During the fifth, the ladies put another two runs on the board. During the seventh inning, the Lady Panthers determined to put up a fight, rallied together for an eight run inning. A Brenda Sneed three-run homerun got the Panthers rolling, and smart softball brought five more runs across the plate for the Panthers, forcing the game into an eighth inning. Texas Southern scored one run, but the Panthers couldn’t match, which brought the game to a close.
The Prairie View pitching staff had four strikeouts, with five RBIs from Brenda Sneed and four from Emily Holcombe.
During the second game, the built up anger managed to pull the Ladies through to their first conference win, 10-9. Smart batting brought the l adies eight runs in their favor in the first inning. The ladies didn’t produce any more runs until the last inning. During the span of six innings, Texas Southern brought in nine runs across the plate. An Amberly Fuller single with the bases loaded brought in Lisse Herrera for the game winning run.
Fuller had three hits and RBIs, as Sneed and Uribe had two hits and two RBIs apiece for the win. Bridget Coronado and Janell Myers had three strikeouts each. The next home game for the Lady Panthers will be against UT-San Antonio, Friday, Feb. 22 at 1 p.m.
