Career fair set for Sept. 17-18

Over a hundred of America’s top companies, government agencies, graduate schools and non-profit organizations are expected to participate in the 38th Annual Fall Career Fair.

According to Frederick V. Roberts, assistant director of the Career Services and Outreach Department, September 15-19 is Career Emphasis Week at Prairie View A&M University. Roberts said the increased company participation and strategic focus of the career fair validates the need to continue the event in two parts with all majors (non-technical) and science, engineering and technology majors (technical) job fairs on Sept. 17 and 18, respectively from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Willie A. Tempton Memorial Student Center.

Under the theme: “You’re the One,” the career center is poised to make a career difference with several pre-career fair activities to engage the students.

“Prairie View continues to be the campus of choice for these companies. It’s important that we help our students make the right connections as they prepare for their futures. We believe this year’s career fair will attract more students because of the economy,” Glenda Jones, director of Career Services said.

The center continues to host a series of professional development seminars to assist students in preparing for the corporate campus interviews. They include interviewing techniques, dress for success, salary negotiations and corporate etiquette.

Other activities set for the week include a resume fair and mock interviews with corporate employees Sept. 15; the annual I. C. Gordon banquet honoring the students who participated in internships, research assistantships, and military field exercises during the 2007-2008 school year on Sept. 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the MSC; a networking social and open house at the Crowne Plaza Brookhollow Hotel in Houston, Texas, Sept. 17, supported by CITGO, GE, and Chevron.
