Plies asked the question, “Who hotter than me?”
Well Plies, we actually have two answers to that question and it’s right here on the campus of Prairie View. SupaSTAAR and Dorrough Music are two of the hottest MCs on the rise right now.
These two rappers have been burning up the charts with one of the hottest summer anthems to hit radio airwaves and recently celebrated a milestone. The single “Halle Berry” hit number 85 on the Billboard Top 100 chart.
Produced by one of the hottest producers right now, Q. Smith, Dorrough Music and SupaSTAAR have everybody saying “Bom, bom, bom, bom, bom, bom bom bom.”
“It feels good to be a part of something so hot,” says Dorrough Music. “The song is hot, so I definitely feel like it deserves to be on the charts.”
This hip single compares a good-looking female to one of the hottest actresses in the movie business as you might have guessed from listening to the hook. Coming upon a hit might be expected for some artists, but for Jamal “SupaSTAAR” Palmer, he kind of stumbled upon his Billboard success.
“I thought it was one of the weakest tracks I had put out at first,” said SupaSTAAR. “I didn’t think it would go anywhere but when I got it on wax I knew it had potential.”
Being that SupaSTAAR is a Prairie View student, along with Dorrough Music, the concept of the song originated right here on the campus that produces productive people.
One day SupaSTAAR and a friend were yelling out “Halle Berry” to a female from a balcony in University Village Phase III. His friend said that he should make a song about it.
“We recorded the song and put it on my MySpace page and it got kind of big,” said SupaSTAAR.
Making it even bigger was a verse from Dallas native Dorrough Music. Having the streets buzzing already with the single “Walk That Walk,” Dorrough Music was immediately drawn to the concept of “Halle Berry.”
“When I heard it (the song) I was like this is a throwed concept,” said Dorrough. “I heard a lot of songs that had potential, but this is one of the songs where we were like this is a hit.”
Making it on the Billboard Top 100 is not something every rapper starting out can say they’ve done. This list is not only composed of R&B and rap songs, but all genres of music. It compiles the hottest songs that are currently hitting the radio airwaves.
“When I first heard it made the Billboard charts, I was at home and the people from Billboard called me directly,” said SupaSTAAR. “I was like ‘how did that happen’ and the people on the phone were like “ask your fans.”
These two rappers were beating out many mainstream rappers on the charts who had already been in the rap game for a long time.
These two young, talented rappers are not only taking over The Hill, but are also looking to conquer the rap game. Dorrough Music is just finishing another single titled “Caramel Sundae” that features Dallas rap artist Fat Bastard and SupaSTAAR is working on his next single “I Look Good” and his album which drops in early 2009.
If you can’t get enough of this duo together, they will be featured on a couple of mixtapes together, including “Financial Aid 5.”
Bigger success is definitely in the future for these up and coming artists as they have only begun their journeys into the rap world. This is just another example of how Prairie View produces productive people.
