Prairie View continues yearly tradition of open house

Students attended Open House held by the Office of Student Activities held in the MSC Sept. 3 to meet with several organizations available on campus.

“I came out to gain knowledge of the different organizations and to explore my options,” sophomore Tenechia Beal said.

Each recognized organization has its unique reasons for having been established. Kappa Psi Omega believes that it is important to promote brotherhood and unity while being a positive example of African-American males doing the right thing. Also, Kappa Psi Omega is currently helping build a church named Temple of Refuge.

Community service is more than just a trend among organizations at Prairie View. “The Prairie View College of Nursing gives community service hours and collects school supplies for Jones Elementary School, and has canned food drives” said junior Jolandria Johnson.

There are several projects that various organizations on campus undertake within the community.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has founded the program “A Voteless People is a Hopeless People” to help people register to vote. They plan to supply busing for people to the polls this year.

Kappa Delta Chi is trying to start a Spanish tutoring program for Prairie View students this year and adopt a nursing home in Hempstead.

“We promote community service, integrity, honesty and leadership in our community and university,” Sharon D. Ibarra said. Kappa Delta Pi, an honor society for education majors, plans to do its part as well. They host book drives in the Hempstead and Waller areas, as well as donate money for school supplies and donate to churches during Christmas time.

Some students choose to be a part of more than just one organization. Sophomore Andre Collins is a member of National Association of Black Accountants, Students In Free Enterprise, Phi Beta Lambda, and National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. “I’m just trying to make a difference,” Collins said.

Each student had his/her own agenda for attending Open House. Sophomore Victor Williams said, “I’m trying to meet new people and become more active on campus.”

All in all both the student body and various organizations were given the opportunity to interact with one another with both parties learning something new about the other.
