The men and women’s cross-country teams took to the road to compete in the SWAC Cross Country Championships in Jackson, Miss. on Oct. 27.
The men and women both competed fiercely and have individual top-20 finishes to show for it. Veteran and longtime standout Alonzo Thomas led the way for the Panther men by finishing 14th overall with a time of 27 minutes, 4 seconds. The next Panther to cross the line was Errol Hampton in 31st place with a time of 28 minutes 58 seconds.
Overall, the men placed sixth with a total of 158 points from the top five counted scores while for the Lady Panthers, Claribel Quiroz finished as the top Panther in 18th place with a finishing time of 20 minutes 46 seconds.
Overall, the Lady Panthers had four runners place in the top 30 which paced the team to a fifth place team finish with a team total of 134 points. Pine Bluff’s Vasity Chemweno won the women’s race while her fellow Golden Lion Moses Alukunyang won the men’s race. Alabama State University finished in first in the men’s team title by having four runners place in the top 11. Alabama State also won the women’s title by having three runners place in the top 10 and five in the top 12.
