SGA held a “Go Green” forum Oct. 23 in the Alvin I. Thomas administration building with Richard Norton, assistant vice president of physical plant administration, along with Dawn Self-Steph, AbitibiBowater recycling coordinator, in an effort to start a recycling program on campus.
Self-Steph introduced the university’s AbitibiBowater Paper Retriever Program, where the plant takes paper that is placed into their recycling bins and puts it through a process, having recycled paper as an end result that is sold. Schools, churches, and non-profit organizations do not have to pay for the bins.
“If you read the Houston Chronicle, you’re reading our paper. It is a fundraising opportunity. The more you recycle, the more money you’ll get back,” said Self-Steph. “if it’s paper and it can tear, it can go into the bin.”
Newspapers, magazines, catalogs, junk mail and cardboard could all go inside the bin.
“Students should be advised that for every piece of waste that’s not recycled, they’re potentially throwing away money. Keeping our campus beautiful and environmentally friendly not only shows respect and pride in the university, but also does our part as a university toward the overall goal of helping out the environment,” said Robert Powell, junior civil engineering major.
The bins would be placed all over campus with totes inside for convenience.
