What is the importance of casting your vote?

What is the whole purpose of voting? Sure, it’s fun if the person you vote for wins, but why do people vote? Many freshmen said they’re voting to make a difference, but some say that is not the correct reason for voting.

Celestial Hall, a sophomore at stated, “The reason I vote is to better our society.”

Another great reason for voting was made by reading Professor Lisa Johnson. “the reason why we vote is because our grandparents’ parents couldn’t. The reason we vote is for all those black families who were discriminated against just because of the color of their skin. The reason why we vote is because of people like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who fought for our rights, but were killed just because some people are afraid of change.”

Hundreds of people chanted as they jam packed the streets of Prairie View marching toward the voting polls. That day was a good day, that day students stood up for what they believed in and made a difference.

Many of them were marching for their own personal reasons, but in a way they were all there to do the same thing. As they walked and chanted, ‘Obama… Obama… Obama’ the youth of America could be seen among these African-Americans who knew what they were doing, young African-Americans making a choice to do what was right. Even though not everyone at Prairie View thinks alike we all still came together to vote and make history.

I realize as a black male that even though my culture has accomplished a plethora of things, there is still a gang of things that we have not ventured into yet. One of those things being the presidency, by putting a black male in the office we are not only making a huge goal we are also telling the whole world that as a culture we are able to do anything another culture can do, if not better. When we put a black male in the White House we will be not only breaking down those never-before-seen boundaries, we are also making unerasable history.

So on Oct. 23, 2008 the reason I’m voting is not only to help out our society, I’m voting to make our mark on history, I’m voting for change, I’m voting for my grandparents’ parents, for my brothers and sisters who aren’t old enough to vote, I’m voting for those hundreds of black families who were hosed down just for voicing what they believed in, I’m voting for a better tomorrow today, I’m voting for what you and I both believe in.
