The Department of Public Safety is still working to return the items that were stolen during the Christmas break and catch the criminals who committed the acts. Lieutenant of Operations David Webb said, “As long as you have a university, you’re going to have problems, it’s a constant struggle, but we stay innovative.”
Improvements have been made to strengthen security on campus. Due to construction on the campus, Operation Lockdown has been mended and is now Operation Stand-In. The officers will be able to take more control in the Phase I, II, and III complexes and will actively be on patrol looking for violations. Smoking, drinking, pets, or anything else in violation will result in a citation and the recipient must go through a judiciary process, which can result in expulsion. Currently, four officers are in the interviewing process to become hired. If all goes well, the latest the officers will be able to start is March 1.
Webb wants the students to know that, “Records follow you. Once you get arrested, that follows you. Before you throw a punch, or you and your buddies cause trouble, think about your career. It’s not a matter of if I get caught, it’s a matter of when I get caught. It might take time, but you will get caught. Cameras provide irrefutable and unmistakable evidence, so it’s best that you don’t do it. Don’t let one weekend of drinking ruin your career. We want to create an environment where the students’ parents feel good about where their child is living.”
Webb also stated that 95 percent of the items stolen during the State Fair Classic weekend have been returned. Three arrests have been made and those students have been expelled from the University, face a criminal record, and have pending court cases.
“It’s a team effort from the teachers, managers, and community assistants. We’re asking everyone who can to help out,” said Webb.
If you have any information, Lt. Webb asks that you go to the police station and speak to him, investigator Hunt, or any officer on duty. If you don’t want to give your name, you can call the hotline at 411 or 936-261-1375. Your identity will remain anonymous.
