UC continues tradition, annual honors banquet

In an effort to recognize freshmen for their outstanding academic efforts, University College held its annual Honors Banquet Jan. 30 in the Willie Tempton Memorial Student Center Ballroom.

Some 116 freshmen were recognized for their scholastic achievements during fall 2008 semester, including the deceased Kristopher Bookman. Among them were 36 students who earned a 4.0 GPA.

“It is definitely a feeling of accomplishment for the freshmen,” said Andrew Williams III, a senior communications major. “To be able to do so well their first semester, all these guys deserve something like this.

As the first year students signed their names before sitting down and being honored, dinner was being served.

Advisors Jocelyn Whiting and Shayla Wiggins were the speakers at the program. Their presentation was titled, “Yes we can, Yes we did…Continuing the legacy.”

“Choose carefully the work that you place,” read Wiggins from a poem. “Your work is your mouthpiece.” Wiggins explained that each of the honored freshmen were not ordinary, but extraordinary.

The freshmen felt honored for their accomplishments.

“Since I’m in the Marching Storm, I wasn’t sure if my GPA would be that high, but I continued to strive toward achieving a good GPA,” said freshman Ricardo Garza, a criminal justice major.

Each building had the opportunity to take pictures before being awarded a certificate and an engraved pen.
