Everyone has a perception of fashion. The question is does fashion always have to be recognized based on labels, or can it just be something that looks nice and well put together? Honestly when do brands matter?
Fifty students on Prairie View’s campus participated in a poll asking when do brands matter.
About one-third of the students who participated in the poll said that it doesn’t matter what brand a male’s clothes are as long as it looks nice.
“It doesn’t matter what brand you have on as long as it’s kept up well,” said Tiffany Freeman,a senior business management major.
The others said that it really does help make them look nicer if they have on a polo shirt or something of that nature.
When asked if brands matter in relation to females, there was a switch in the responses.
One hundred percent of the students who participated in the poll said it didn’t matter what a female wore, labeled or not. If it’s appealing to the eye, that is all that matters.
If anyone notices or not, all clothes have a name brand, but who is to say which name brands are better than others?
The top affordable name brands of today that were given by students around campus for this poll vary from: XXI, Hollister, American Eagle, Charlotte Russe, True Religion, Aeropostale, Abercombie & Fitch, Polo Ralph Lauren, Coogi, Baby Phat, Black Label, Dereon, Rocawear, LRG, Ed Hardy, Levi, Lucky brand jeans, American Apparel, and Lacoste.
For the people who say they do not care about name brands, what if someone wore clothing that replicated the original clothing brand or as most people would say if it was “knock-off,” would it matter then?
Cledell Brown, a senior business accounting major, said, “Brands matter when you care about your appearance and what others think.”
When it comes to knock-offs you would think that people would care how others viewed them, but the truth is, knock-offs are worn on this campus every day.
Are shoes any different? Maybe shoes have an unwritten code about them that must be followed.
Shoes have been a fad for some time now, but not for everyone. Some people buy shoes for every outfit in their closet while some just wear the same ones until they get worn out. Anyone who is fashionable would know the ins and outs to the shoes dos and don’ts.
“If your shoes look decent and they are not FUBUs, Shaqs, Starberries, Champions, Melissas, clear Air Force Ones, clear Air Jordans, net beauty supply slippers, or jellys you are OK,” said Jamekia Goodman, a graduating senior criminal justice major.
With Prairie View being a fashion-based school outside of academics, we, the student body, must stay on top of our fashion but don’t let anyone tell you what is fashionable because fashion is nothing but what you make it.
Style is a distinctive matter of expression so feel free to express yourself, and when someone asks, don’t be afraid to tell them what brand you are wearing.
