The Biology Department of PRAIRIE VIEW A&M UNIVERSITY strives to prepare its students for careers in the health professions. Many of our students, upon matriculation, enter medical schools, veterinary schools, dental schools, optometry schools, or pharmacy schools. The department also prepares its students to study medical technology, physical therapy, or occupational therapy.
The Department of Chemistry is located on the second floor of the New Science Building. The department is an ACS Accredited program that has state-of the-art instrumentation for teaching and research in chemistry and allied fields, multimedia-equipped classrooms, modern laboratories for teaching and research. Our faculty members have specializations in analytical, environmental, inorganic, organic, physical, and biochemistry. Most of our students continue in chemistry-related fields after graduation, often attending graduate schools in chemistry, biochemistry, medicine, or pursuing careers in industrial research or the biomedical sciences. The department awards a B.S. in chemistry with degree options in biomedical sciences or forensic sciences, in addition to the traditional chemistry option.
The Department of Languages & Communications is composed of three academic units within the College of Arts and Sciences: Spanish, English, and Communications. The department’s teaching facilities include: a PC & MAC computer laboratory and a media and language performance laboratory. The highlight of the department is the recently renovated digital television studio which is located in 103-A of Hilliard Hall. In addition to teaching and research the department fosters a close relationship with students.
The Department of Mathematics offers an innovative and comprehensive undergraduate (leading to BS degree) and graduate (leading to MS degree) programs in mathematics from which a major may select one of four emphasis options: applied, mathematics, statistics, pure mathematics, and mathematics teaching.
The Physics Department is an undergraduate degree-granting department, and is implementing a massive restructuring of its programs and activities. In addition to offering the newly installed four-track program for physics majors, the department also serves a large number of students from engineering, the sciences, pre-engineering and pre-medical programs, and other undergraduates seeking to satisfy core curriculum requirements.
The Division of Social Work, Behavioral and Political Sciences provides support courses for all undergraduate programs in addition to offering four areas of degree specialization in history, political sciences, sociology and social work. A master of arts in Sociology is offered as well. These specializations help prepare students to pursue a variety of career options, including urban and regional planning, public administration, international affairs, public policy, law enforcement, social work and human services, and educational and legal services.
The Department of Music and Theater offers bachelor of music degree plans in performance and in all-level certification. A bachelor of arts in drama and music. As well as a minor in music. The department is also known for the Marching Storm and Charles Gilpin Players.
