Lady Panthers look good in exhibition

The Prairie View A&M University Lady Panthers started the season off with an 89-55 victory over the Texas A&M Kingsville Javelinas on Thursday, Nov. 5. “The team is good,” said SG Dominique Smith. “We are growing and really working on our chemistry.”

The Lady Panthers never trailed in the exhibition game against the Javelinas. They used their strong pressing defense to create multiple turnovers throughout the first half. With the persistence of the Lady Panthers’ defense, they ended the first half with a lead of 45-25.

Guard Latara Darrett, a newcomer to the Lady Panther squad, started her first game off great and played the entire first and second half. She was one of the key players in the game, scoring 20 points. “I hope to have the best season I’ve had in college and get drafted,” said Gatti Werema. Werema led the team in scoring (12.9) and rebounding last year (7.7) and is hoping to led the Lady Panthers back to the NCAA Tournament again this year. “We need to work hard, but I think we’re ready.” She continued that leadership with her game high of 26 points.

As the second half started, the Lady Panthers still controlled the tempo and the game. At one point during the second half, guard Candice Thomas did her signature cross over move that drove the crowd crazy.

“I am really proud to be a coach here at Prairie View A&M University,” said Coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke. “I am happy we have finally gained the respect of the NCAA community.” Regarding their style of play, Cooper-Dyke stated, “We will run, press, and score. Hopefully that translates into wins this year.”

The Lady Panthers will take on Long Beach State in the first regular season game on Friday, Nov. 13 at Long Beach, Calif.
