I’m starting to think maybe I’m a lucky charm after all.
My high school football team was trash for forever and ever, but once I got there, things changed.
They slowly, but surely, won more games each season, and my senior year, we went to the playoffs for the first time in ten years.
More players that year got scholarship offers than ever before and we were finally seen as a team that was a top contender in our class division.
Since then, my alma mater has continued to do well and players are getting opportunities they’ve never had before. The athletic program has increased greatly with support and as a result, we have some of the best equipment, one of the best fields, and some of the newest uniforms around.
My point in saying all of this is that maybe, just maybe, I’m that lucky charm I always thought I was.
For years Prairie View’s football team was not the best. In fact, it was always the worst. They were barely winning games and just causing much embarrassment to the university.
I’m from Louisiana, so of course I’m used to the Grambling State and Southern football powerhouses that have always existed, so Prairie View was new to me.
In fact, teasing me and my decision to become a Panther, my family informed me that they were looking forward to laughing at me when their teams, Grambling State and Southern, beat us.
For a few years, they got their laughs, and that was all fine and dandy…until we, the powerful Panthers, smashed both of their teams this season, which is also my senior year. How exciting!
Since I’ve been at PVAMU our record, the entire program, and student morale has improved so much. Is it me?
For the first time in a while, if not forever, we are pretty much guaranteed a spot in the SWAC championship and now we have some of the best players to ever walk Prairie View’s grounds.
This all rings that familiar bell that sounded my last year in high school. Is it wrong for me to take the credit? Uh, no! It’s been proven time and time again, and I must say, I like this feeling.
