Thurgood Marshall visits Memphis, Tenn.

Prairie View students embarked on a journey to Nashville, Tenn, to attend the bi-annual Thurgood Marshall College Fund’s Member University Professional Institute on March 7.

This four-day-event, held once every fall and spring, took place in the Gaylord Opryland Hotel and Convention Center, where students attended a variety of seminars in which they were informed on a wide range of tips that will be useful once they enter the job force, post graduation and taught career building techniques.

The attendees were informed on many things including how to interview, public relations strategies, how to write a grant, as well as the importance of philanthropy once they become alumni.

The 12 students who attended this event were either selected directly through the TMCF, or given the opportunity to attend on the basis of their accomplishments at Prairie View. Career Service selected the remaining attendees who were not direct participants in the TMCF based on leadership skills as well as their current academic standings with the university.

Community development major Tiara Fulton, in the College of Architecture, said, “This is an opportunity that all students should have in their college career. This event opened my eyes, it made me feel like a leader and that each and every time I am in public I know how to present myself.”

Director of Career and Outreach Services Glenda Jones said, “The students’ leadership skills are enhanced and developed to become competitive in the work force.”
