Turnovers prove to be deadly for Panthers

The Lady Panthers dropped the final game of the season to Alcorn State, 72-66, Saturday afternoon at the Whitney Center in Alcorn, Miss.

In a fast pace game the Lady Panthers were unable to defeat the Lady Braves in an up and down game.

Early in the first half the Lady Panthers seemed to not want the ball as they committed six turnovers to allow Alcorn State to get off to a 12-4 advantage.

Lady Panther, Dominique Smith, has turned into Prairie View’s main scoring threat as she went on a 6-0 run on her own. With the score of 28-25 at the 3:35 mark the Lady Braves would go on a 7-0 run to take the lead going into halftime at 34-30.

In the second half it was much of the same, as the Lady Panthers would fight hard, but to no avail.

The Lady Braves would open up with an 8-2 run, taking charge of the game.

The Lady Panthers were able to cut the lead to two, but were unable to upset the Braves at home.

Smith led all scores with 25 points, three assists and one steal.

Courtney Larsen followed with 14 points, four assists and three steals. Ciara Banks contributed 11 points and pulled down 12 rebounds.

In the previous game, the Lady Panthers’ second half shooting woes were their downfall which gave Southern University the final edge in a 55-33 win at the A. W. Mumford Stadium on Thursday.

Not only did the Lady Panthers have a terrible performance shooting at a 32 percent clip, they were unable to protect the ball, making 40 turnovers on the night.

The Lady Panthers attempted only 34 field goals compared to Southern University’s 69 field goal attempts.

No Lady Panther was able to obtain double-digits in points.

Smith and Robin Jones were the top scorers for the Lady Panthers as they contributed eight points each.
