Prairie View A&M was dominated in the first round of the SWAC Tourney crushing their dreams of playing in the NCAA Tournament. The Panthers fell to hated rival Texas Southern University 66-49 loss Thursday night Mar. 11, in the quarterfinals of the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament.
Texas Southern, a five seed, defeated the fourth-seeded Panthers’ after Prairie View swept the Tigers during the regular-season.
At halftime the Panthers were down to a manageable 30-23 advantage, but the Tigers of Texas Southern would keep their foot on the pedal and run the score up to a 20-point margin midway through the second half.
Prairie View A&M was unable to rally due to a sub-par team shooting performance of 33 percent in the second half and only attempting five free throws for the game. Only two Panthers went to the free throw line, shooting 2-for-5, while the Tigers combined to make 15 of 24 foul shots.
Texas Southern guard Deandre Hall was the high scorer of the night with 19-points including three assists and four rebounds. The only other two double-digit scorers for Texas Southern were David Burrell and Junior Treasure who chipped in 11 points apiece.
Panther Michael Griffin scored 11-points and Tim Meadows had 10-points in the 17-point loss to the Tigers.
Prairie View A&M ended the season losing three of their last four games during the month of March and posting a disappointing record of 16-15 (11-7 Southwestern Athletic Conference).
