Lady Panthers fall in first round

The Prairie View A&M women’s tennis team’s spring season came to a close as they were defeated by Alabama A&M at the Tourney Opener for the SWAC Championships. The Lady Panthers of PVAMU were shut down 4-0 against the Lady Bulldogs of AAMU.

The Lady Panthers were not as prepared as they should have been for the match, which allowed AAMU to have the upper hand. PVAMU seemed to be at a loss, considering the four matches that were incomplete and the two that ended in default wins to AAMU.

Fourth singles Margaret Banks of PVAMU gave her all in her match against Brittany Jelks of AAMU, but was defeated with a final score of 6-2,6-2.

Fifth singles Lise Karenzi was neck and neck with opponent Jasmine Cherry of AAMU refusing to go down without a fight. Undoubtedly though, she was defeated, with a final score of 6-4, 6-4.

Second doubles, Lerato Ndlovu and Alejandra Barrera participated in the only doubles match played. However, opponents Denise Cherry and Shannon Warner won the match with little effort. The match ended with the score set at 6-0.

Despite the loss of many matches and defaults, Alabama A&M University’s Women’s Tennis Coach, Browning stated “It was a roller coaster ride as we began with a full team but had to deal with the loss of several players during the middle of the spring which really hurt.”

“It was very emotional as we persevered to claim the No. 2 seed from the (SWAC) West with only five players but ran out of gas at the end. At the end of the day they all deserve a round of applause.”

Alabama A&M Placed second in the championship, PVAMU was unable to hold a place in the tournament.

With the season closed, Coach Cochran of PVAMU is pulling for next year’s season to be strong. Reflection will give the Lady Panthers of PVAMU a second chance to succeed in next season.
