My favorite time of the year: Welcome to the NFL draft

The NFL draft is this week and Lance Zierlein of the Houston Chronicle has my team, the Houston Texans, selecting Kyle Wilson, corner back out of Boise State as the 20th pick.

According to CBS Sports’ draft tracker, only three football players from HBCUs are projected to either be drafted into the NFL or potentially be signed as free agents.

Alabama A&M wide receiver Thomas Harris, Morehouse offensive tackle Ramon Harewood and Norfolk State wide receiver Chris Bell are all projected to go in the seventh and final round.

Harewood and Bell actually have the designation “7-FA” in the draft tracker, meaning they could be taken in the seventh or be signed as free agents before training camps open in July.

Not being drafted isn’t the end-all and be-all for those aspiring to the NFL. Sometimes those ranked just outside of the projection cutoff could earn an invitation to a training camp. For example, only the top 24 running back prospects are projected to be taken, but there could be room for players like LaMarcus Coker of Hampton (ranked 32nd) and William Ford of SC State (37th).

This year there are no prospects on the radar for pro scouts from Prairie View A&M University, but you always have a shot if you work hard and want something.

My four-day-weekend starting Thursday laid back at the crib watching my team add the last pieces for our superbowl run in Dallas.
